Some Highlights of 2010

The beginning of a new year is good time to reflect on past achievements and think ahead to future aims. So, with that in mind here are some of the highlights of 2010 and a sneak preview of some of the things we will be doing in 2011.

Sharing our Science

In September 2010 we launched ‘Sharing our Science’ with the first public event Psychology and Climate Change: collective solutions to a global problem being a huge success. You can listen to the lecture on the British Academy website.

More events are planned this year. To find out what's on sign up to our Public Engagement mailing list.

Public engagement grants

In 2010 Dr Sally Hodges and the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust launched their emotional well-being website for children, Cam's Den. Sally was awarded a grant in 2009.

The 2010 grants were announced in November. We will bring you more news on these as they progress.

Daily news from the Society

Many thanks to those who have helped with our Latest News section elsewhere on this very website.

This has been instrumental in making our website more vibrant and encouraging people to return more often to get the latest news. If you would like to get involved all you need to do is contact mediacentre@bps.org.uk and ask to join our media list.

This list makes it possible for our members to get involved with a range of media enquiries and provide good, evidence-based psychology comment on the news of the day.

Membership changes

As part of your membership renewal mailing, sent in November, we outlined the recent changes in membership grades and titles.

One of the changes is that Graduate Members are now entitled to use the designatory letters MBPsS after their name as recognition of their status within the Society.

The Psychologist

In 2010 we had issues on social inclusion and pregnancy and the history of experimental psychology. This was accompanied by a timeline poster, produced with generous support from the Experimental Psychology Society and the Higher Education Academy Psychology Network. Let editor, Dr Jon Sutton, hear your views on the year's issues, via e-mail or on Twitter or Facebook.

Jon said: '2011 will see the introduction of a 'big picture' feature (see January issue), and web development will be a priority (tailoring material to particular channels and increasing the multi-media presence). Always keen to hear new ideas from members so please get in touch.'

Research Digest - Best Blog 2010

Our free Research Digest service was voted best psychology blog in the international Research Blogging Awards 2010. The editor, Dr Christian Jarrett, has also built a large following via Twitter and Facebook.

Plans for 2011 include the launch of a splinter blog specialising in occupational psychology.

Conference and events

'Psychology for students' sold out in Nottingham and London with record numbers attending. These events demonstrate the appetite for psychology amongst A-Level and undergraduates students.

This year we are working hard to build on last year’s Annual Conference success by providing an exciting programme of talks and a great social programme.

Don't forget to keep up to date with BPS Conferences via Twitter and Facebook.

Accreditation through partnership

We launched 'accreditation through partnership' after two years of development and evaluation work and we took on the accreditation of 20 Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner training programmes in England, on behalf of the national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme.

In 2011 we will implement training and support for members working with us as reviewers for accreditation through partnership.

BPS Learning Centre

Feedback from the 2010 CPD workshops showed attendees were happy with the training and it offered valued the input towards their CPD.

A Learning Centre spokesperson said: 'We have worked closely with Member Networks to ensure the 2011 CPD opportunities reflect what our members are looking for'.

The 2011 CPD Directory is available to view online now. If you have any topic ideas for 2012 please complete a short online survey (Ends 31 January).

Professional practice

A major success in 2010 was that for the first time in our history psychologists took up the role of Approved Clinicians previously reserved for medically trained professionals. Read more about this in September's Psychologist.

In 2011 our Professional Practice Board (PPB) will support work on Behaviour Change, Brain Injury and Offending, and Capacity to Consent to Sexual Relationships.

Membership support and development teams - Chartered members

In 2010 we produced Member Conduct Rules and enabled members to obtain Criminal Bureau Checks via the Society. In 2011 the focus will be on creating value for members, promoting Chartered status to employers and key stakeholders and developing the support we offer. Any comments or suggestions are welcome to this e-mail address CAP@bps.org.uk.

Membership support and development teams - Academics, teachers and researchers

In 2011 we will focus on a recruitment drive of staff in academic departments and improve the support, resources and services that the Society offers as a learned Society. We aim to increase the opportunities for fostering academic networks, together with a clearer articulation of what CPsychol means for academics and researchers.
