NICE Quality Standard on Depression in AdultsThe National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) have published new guidelines on ‘Quality Standard on Depression in Adults’. The British Psychological Society are partners in this publication.Estimates of the incidence of depression within the population range from 3-6% of adults and the number of people identified with and requiring treatment for depression is forecast to increase by 17% to 1.45 million by 2026. The annual service costs to treat people with depression in 2007 were estimated to be £1.7 billion, far less than the estimated cost of depression to the economy (£7.5 billion). This NICE quality standard defines clinical best practice within this topic area. It provides specific, concise quality statements, measures and audience descriptors to provide patients and the public, health and social care professionals, commissioners and service providers with definitions of high-quality care. • NICE Quality Standard on Depression in Adults
