Health of Military Personnel Parliamentary SeminarThe Society recently co-sponsored a parliamentary seminar with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) - ‘Health of Military Personnel’, chaired by the Rt. Hon. James Arbuthnot MP (Con), Chair of the Commons Defence Select Committee since 2005.The seminar aimed to discuss how the latest research can be used to improve the physical and mental health of current and former service personnel. Leading psychologists, psychiatrists and rehabilitation experts talked about how policymaking can take account of the latest evidence. Presentations were given by Colonel John Etherington (Director of Defence Rehabilitation, Headley Court, Ministry of Defence), Dr Jamie Hacker-Hughes (Head of Defence Clinical Psychology and Defence Consultant Advisor) and Professor Matthew Hotopf (Professor of Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry). The British Psychological Society’s President, Dr Gerry Mulhern, was pleased with the event which attracted a high number of MPs, peers and advisers and gave us the opportunity to ensure that sound, psychological evidence-based research helps influence opinion at all levels of government. 'The physical and psychological wellbeing of military personnel is a matter of great concern, especially with so many servicemen and servicewomen serving in, and returning from, areas of conflict,' he added.
